Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup fresh cranberries, chopped (or dried cranberries if unavailable)

Zest of 1 large orange

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons orange juice

1 teaspoon orange zest

A pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cranberries and Orange Zest: Gently fold in the chopped cranberries and orange zest, ensuring they are evenly dispersed throughout the mixture.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Form the Dough: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, and stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly crumbly but hold together.

Shape the Scones: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for about 1 minute. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut the circle into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake: Place the scones in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Prepare the Glaze: While the scones are baking, combine the powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Mix until smooth.

Cool and Glaze: Once the scones are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Drizzle the orange glaze over the warm scones.

Serve: Enjoy your sweet cranberry orange scones warm or at room temperature with your favorite tea or coffee!
