Ingredients

1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)

1 cup fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries), for topping

Maple syrup, for drizzling

Instructions

Prep the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, add your cubed bread. If you’d like a slightly toasted flavor, spread the cubes on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 10-15 minutes.

Make the Custard: In another large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until fully combined and smooth.

Combine: Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are well-coated. If using nuts, gently fold them in at this stage.

Soak: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for a deeper flavor. This allows the bread to absorb the custard.

Bake: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour the soaked bread mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Serve: Once baked, let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Serve warm topped with fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup for an extra touch of sweetness.

Enjoy: Indulge in this decadent treat with family and friends, perfect for breakfast or brunch!
