Ingredients

1 cup water

½ cup unsalted butter

1 cup all-purpose flour

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt

Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Chocolate sauce or fruit preserves, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Dough: In a medium saucepan, combine the water and butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently until the butter is completely melted. Once boiling, remove the saucepan from the heat.

Add Flour and Mix: Quickly add the flour and salt to the melted butter mixture. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the dough forms a smooth ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan, about 1-2 minutes.

Incorporate Eggs: Allow the dough to cool for a couple of minutes, then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. The mixture should be glossy and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Shape the Puffs: Using a pastry bag or a spoon, drop generous tablespoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each puff to allow for rising.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the puffs have risen and are golden brown. Do not open the oven door during the first 15 minutes of baking.

Cool: Once baked, remove from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.

Serve: Dust with powdered sugar if desired, and serve warm with chocolate sauce or fruit preserves for dipping.
