Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko preferred for extra crispiness)

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 cup unsweetened plant milk (such as almond or soy)

1 tablespoon soy sauce

Cooking oil for frying

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: After pressing the tofu, cut it into bite-sized cubes. Aim for uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.

Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the plant milk and soy sauce. This will be the wet mixture to coat the tofu.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, combine the flour, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, dried herbs, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings throughout the dry mixture.

Coat the Tofu: Dip each tofu cube first into the wet mixture, allowing any excess liquid to drip off. Then, roll the tofu in the dry mixture until fully coated. Press gently to help the coating adhere.

Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of cooking oil over medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, sprinkle a pinch of flour into the oil; if it sizzles, it’s ready.

Fry the Tofu: Carefully place the coated tofu nuggets into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.

Drain Excess Oil: Use a slotted spoon to remove the nuggets from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

Serve: Serve the crispy garlic herb tofu nuggets hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as sweet chili sauce or vegan ranch.
