Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

4 cloves garlic, finely minced

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)

Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Grated Parmesan cheese, for sprinkling

Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center, pour in the activated yeast mixture, and the olive oil. Mix until a dough starts to form.

Knead: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. If it's too sticky, add a little more flour.

First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Prep the Garlic Mixture: While the dough is rising, melt the butter in a small skillet over low heat. Add the minced garlic, Italian herbs, and freshly cracked black pepper. Sauté for about 2-3 minutes until fragrant (do not let the garlic brown). Set aside to cool slightly.

Shape the Breadsticks: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out onto a floured surface into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Cut the dough into strips, about 1 inch wide.

Form the Sticks: Take each strip and twist it a few times before placing it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Continue until all strips are shaped and on the baking sheet.

Second Rise: Cover the breadsticks with a clean towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bake: Brush the breadsticks with the garlic butter mixture generously. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, brush with any remaining garlic butter. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Serve warm with marinara sauce or a side of olive oil for dipping.
