Creamy Tomato Basil Pasta

1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a kick)

1 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped (plus extra for garnish)

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (plus extra for serving)

Zest of 1 lemon

Fresh lemon juice (from the zested lemon)

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve ½ cup of pasta water, then drain the rest and set aside.

    Make the Sauce Base: In the same pot over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

      Add Tomatoes: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, sugar, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a simmer, cooking for about 5-7 minutes to let the flavors meld.
