Ingredients

1 loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup raisins (optional, for extra texture)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional for crunch)

Butter, for greasing the baking dish

Maple syrup, for serving

Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.

Combine Bread and Add-ins: In a large mixing bowl, arrange the cinnamon raisin bread cubes. If you're using raisins and chopped nuts, sprinkle them evenly over the bread cubes. Toss gently to combine.

Whisk Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined and slightly frothy.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Gently fold the mixture to fully integrate the liquid with the bread. Press down slightly on the bread to make sure it absorbs the mixture well.

Let it Soak: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for a truly decadent flavor).

Bake: After soaking, remove the dish from the refrigerator and uncover it. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Serve: Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve with warm maple syrup.
